Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 3, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains what information the DutyPal mobile application ("DutyPal", "the App") handles, why, where it is stored, and what choices you have.
In short: DutyPal has no user accounts and no servers of its own. Your logs, profile and location history are stored on your phone. We do not sell your data, we do not use advertising, and the App contains no analytics or tracking SDKs.

2. What DutyPal is
DutyPal is a Hours of Service (HOS) logging assistant for commercial drivers in the United States. It helps you keep records of duty status, driving time, breaks and rest, and shows how much time you have left under the applicable rules.
DutyPal is not an Electronic Logging Device (ELD) and is not registered with FMCSA as one.
3. Information stored in the App
The following information is created by you or by the App and is stored only on your device:
- Driver profile: first and last name, driver license number and issuing state, CDL / non-CDL status, carrier name and USDOT number, home terminal address and time zone, operating mode settings.
- Records of duty status: duty status entries, remarks, edits and their history, electronic signatures, the 7-day statement and other declarations you sign in the App.
- Vehicle information: truck and trailer numbers, odometer readings and distances.
- Location data: GPS positions and routes recorded during driving, and place names for duty status changes.
- Motion data: activity recognition signals (for example "in vehicle" or "still") provided by Android.
- App settings and subscription status.
4. Location and activity recognition
DutyPal uses your location, including in the background while a foreground notification is shown, to detect when the vehicle starts and stops moving, to measure distance driven, to record where duty status changes happen, and to evaluate short-haul conditions (for example the distance from your work reporting location).
Location is used only for these features. It is not sent to us, and it is not used for advertising. You can turn off automatic detection in the App, or revoke location and activity recognition permissions in Android settings at any time; the App remains usable with manual entries.
5. Services provided by Google
DutyPal does not run its own servers. Some features rely on services built into Android and Google Play, which process data under the Google Privacy Policy:
- Google Play Services location - determining the device position and activity recognition.
- Android geocoding - turning coordinates into a place name (and a typed address into coordinates). The coordinates or address being looked up are sent to the geocoding provider on your device, usually Google.
- Google Maps - showing your recorded routes on a map; map tiles are downloaded from Google.
- Google Play Billing - purchasing and verifying subscriptions. Payments are handled entirely by Google Play; we never see your payment details.
- Android backup - if Backup is enabled in your device's Android settings, Android may include App data in your device backup stored in your Google account. This is controlled by your device settings, not by DutyPal.
6. Sharing and exports
DutyPal does not share your information with anyone on its own. Data leaves your device only when you choose to send it, for example:
- showing or sending your logs to an enforcement officer during a roadside inspection,
- exporting PDF reports or files and sharing them with your carrier or anyone else through the Android share menu,
- contacting support by email.
Once shared, the copy is handled by the recipient and the app you used to send it.
7. Backup files and encryption
You can save a backup of your data to a file in a location you choose, and restore it later. Backup files are encrypted with a password you set. We do not know this password and cannot recover it; if it is lost, the backup cannot be restored.
8. Retention and deletion
Data stays on your device until you delete it. You can delete entries in the App, clear the App's data in Android settings, or uninstall the App, which removes all data stored by it. Backup files and exports you created remain wherever you saved or sent them.
Federal rules may require drivers and carriers to retain records of duty status for a period of time. Keeping the records you are required to keep is your responsibility.
Because we do not hold your data on any server, there is no account or server-side data for us to delete. If you emailed us, you can ask us to delete that correspondence.
9. Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live (for example California under the CCPA/CPRA, other US states with privacy laws, or the European Union under the GDPR), you may have rights to know, access, correct or delete personal information and to opt out of its sale or sharing. DutyPal does not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. Since your data is stored on your device, you can access, correct and delete it directly in the App. For any request or question, contact us at the address above.
10. Security
Your data is protected by the security of your device and by Android's app sandbox. We recommend using a screen lock on your phone. Backup files are encrypted with your password.
11. Children
DutyPal is intended for adult commercial drivers. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children.
12. Permissions used
- Location (precise and approximate) and background location - automatic drive detection and route recording.
- Physical activity - detecting when you are in a moving vehicle.
- Foreground service - keeping detection running while you drive, with a visible notification.
- Notifications - status, warnings and reminders about your available hours.
- Exact alarms and run at startup - timely warnings and restoring detection after the phone restarts.
- Internet - maps, place names and subscriptions.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy. The current version is always available on this page, with the date of the last update at the top.
